The Hunter Mountain tower is the second of three emergency communications sites that will significantly enhance emergency communications throughout Greene County reducing response times and improving safety for the county’s fire departments, EMS agencies and police officers.

The tower will replace an existing outdated one which is at the end of its useful life and is located in a busy part of the ski center. The new tower will be located 1100 feet away from the existing tower and offers an added 50 feet of ground elevation. Besides providing a better tower, the new site will have microwave and fiber connectivity which significantly improves emergency radio communications and will have direct “line-of-sight” microwave transmission and reception with the Jewett tower that was completed in 2014.

In October of 2013,  Windham Ski Resort donated land to site the Jewett Tower. The new ownership of the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort has generously follow their example – supporting the county’s Emergency Services Communication initiative.

The site excavation, pier forms, and foundation layout were inspected by Greene County officials during the last week in August.  County Administrator Shaun Groden, Planning Director Warren Hart, Deputy Emergency Services Director Randy Ormerod, Emergency Management Specialist Dan King, and Tad Johnston from Delaware Engineering reviewed the 1,600 square foot tower foundation site prior to the pouring of over 600,000 pounds (300 tons) of concrete.

The concrete pumping and delivery was locally-sourced from the Cranesville Block Company Catskill, NY plant. A fleet of six trucks ascended (and decended) Hunter Mountain three times.  Each truck carried  approximately 33,000 pounds of pump-able concrete, taking a little over 30 minutes to climb from the base of the mountain to the site at the summit.

Expected completion of the Hunter Mountain project, including removal of the old tower,  is November of 2016.  This effort is part of an ongoing capital project funded by New York State Homeland Security Grants.  The third of three Greene County Emergency Services Communication Towers will be built in the town of New Baltimore, NY in 2017.
