New York State Policy on Mass Gatherings

During a novel coronavirus briefing on Monday, March 16, 2020, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the state will institute limits on mass gatherings, directing events with 50 or more individuals in attendance to be canceled or postponed.

Public health experts agree mass gatherings with people making sustained close contact are a place where the novel coronavirus can easily infect many people quickly and continue its spread.

In coordination with the governors of New Jersey and Connecticut to create a uniform approach to social distancing that will slow spread of COVID-19 throughout the tri-state area:

The following restrictions will be in place beginning at 8PM on Monday, March 16, 2020:

  • Restaurants and bars will close for on-premise service and move to take-out and delivery only
  • Movie theaters, gyms and casinos will temporarily close

Non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g. parties, celebrations or other social events) are canceled or postponed through April 282, 2020 – NYS Executive Order 202.13
